We still may not know the exact words of Ciara’s now-iconic prayer before meeting Russell Wilson, but one thing is clear—her love story is the gift that keeps on giving. In a new wide-ranging interview with Bustle, Ciara gives us more insight into what makes her marriage to Russell work, while also opening up about motherhood, music, and leveling up.
The conversation is part of Bustle’s special wellness issue, “The Little Things.”
Along with the interview, were stunning visuals that still have us gagging. Ciara exuded mature woman energy in stunning white and cream ensembles. She wore luxurious pieces from Louis Vuitton, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Tiffany & Co., Isabel Marant, Ferragamo, Stella McCartney, Tom Ford, Levi’s, and Femme. Always a hair chameleon, she kept it sleek and powerful with a buss-down middle part while her makeup was effortlessly natural yet bronzy—serving soft glam perfection.

Ciara gives herself grace, surrounded by love.
When it comes to love and confidence, Ciara keeps it real about the work it takes to sustain a happy marriage and self. After having her fourth child, she admits to embracing this version of herself.
She told Bustle, “I’ve got to give myself some grace.”
Even if Russell playfully warns her not to go overboard with shedding the baby weight. “I also was kind of loving this fourth-baby version of me. My baby definitely put a little bit more on my hips and there is, as Russell says, ‘more to grab on’… I want to lean up a little bit more, tone up more, and he’s like, ‘Don’t get crazy.’”
Constant communication is key to their relationship – luckily, Russell is good at it. The “Level Up” singer credits his quarterback mindset for his ability to lead and listen.
“What I will give my husband credit for is he can communicate really well,” she says in a recent interview. “It’s the quarterback in him. He’s so used to having to do that anyway. Sometimes you got to say the ugly before you get to the pretty.”
Ciara & Russell don’t play about each other or keeping their spark alive.
And just because they’re parents, celebrity personalities, and philanthropists doesn’t mean they let the spark fade. Tending to their love and keeping things fresh and sexy is like a “competition” for the couple.
“You need to still turn up the sexy. He walks through the door, and I’m like, ‘OK!’ Because he intentionally went in to go get sexier, to get cute,” says Ciara. “For me, the same thing. It’s a lot sometimes with four kids and doing everything else, but I feel so good when I put in the effort, and he sees it.”
They also have a standing date night tradition every Friday, something she looks forward to as a way to reconnect with her husband. “I’m really looking forward to just being with him, talking about life, looking into each other’s eyes, holding each other’s hands, doing all those things that you do in the beginning… Search for the beginning at all points as best as you can, because we know what that feels like in the beginning—there’s this excitement.”
Ciara’s latest interview adds to everything we already love about her. From sharing her personal journey on social media to letting us in on the highs and lows of balancing motherhood and a thriving career, she’s the definition of grace, grit, and glow-up goals.
And for the single ladies heading into Valentine’s season, Ciara’s interview is a timely reminder that Black love is out there. And as we look for it, we’re still taking notes.
