Chris Brown is heading back to court…but this time, he’s the one that’s doing the accusing.
TMZ reports that the GRAMMY-winning entertainer filed a $500 million defamation lawsuit against the producers of the Investigation Discovery docuseries Chris Brown: A History of Violence, which premiered in October 2024.
In new court documents obtained by TMZ, the singer accuses Warner Bros. Discovery, Ample Entertainment, and others of promoting defamatory claims about him. He also says the producers continued with their narrative after they were allegedly given “proof” that it was false.
The docuseries detailed the singer’s journey from a troubled childhood to becoming one of the biggest stars in music, as well as his well-documented troubles with the law. What Brown is addressing in this lawsuit, however, is the claim that he had a history of committing sexual assault.
The docuseries includes an account from Daisia Chantel Frank, the “Jane Doe” who sued the “Residuals” singer in 2022 for sexual assault. Frank, who is also a defendant in the lawsuit, claims that Brown drugged and raped her on disgraced mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs’ yacht in Miami Beach.
Brown states that Frank has been repeatedly discredited and later withdrew the lawsuit because it was full of lies. He says both Frank and the producers chose to disregard the facts to ruin his already-spotty reputation for fame.
In a statement, Brown’s attorney Levi McCathern says that the case is about “protecting the truth.”
“Despite being provided with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information, knowingly disregarding their ethical obligations as journalists. Their actions undermine not only Mr. Brown’s decade-long efforts to rebuild his life but also the credibility of true survivors of violence.”
The statement adds that his 2017 documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life, remains “the definitive account of his experiences and growth.”
If awarded the $500 million, Brown plans to donate part of the settlement to survivors of sexual abuse.
