This week was nothing short of iconic as two hip-hop legends, Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott and Queen Latifah, became the first rap artists to receive the National Medal of Arts! The ceremony, held on Monday, October 21, marked a historic moment for the culture and for two women whose influence has been felt in music, film, and beyond.

The two rap icons were among 39 recipients honored with “the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the federal government,” representing a combined group from 2022 and 2023 (thanks, COVID, for delaying previous ceremonies). But the wait was worth it—Missy and Queen Latifah, two trailblazers, stood out among the best of the best. (Other recipients include Eva Longoria and Spike Lee).

The “Supa Dupa Fly” raptress took to Twitter/X to express her gratitude, writing, “I am HUMBLY GRATEFUL! Crying Tears of JOY! Thinking of the days I wasn’t so strong, but through FAITH & PRAYER, I kept going.”

She also gave a heartfelt shout-out to Queen Latifah with videos and social content: “And a BiG CONGRATS to my sis @IAMQUEENLATIFAH who deserves all the bouquets she also was honored today! Thank you for kicking down doors QUEEN for me & those after you.”

Missy and Queen Latifah keep it demure: legendary style for a legendary night.

As expected, the femcees brought their A-game in the fashion department. Missy and Queen Latifah rocked chic and classy outfits during the ceremony, choosing dark pantsuits with unique details and expert tailoring. Talk about award-winning fits!

Their hair was just as on point—both opted for slicked-back ponytails that perfectly framed their radiant faces and poppin melanin skin. Queen Latifah, who just hit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame stage, slayed with a slight side part.

Fresh off her first nationwide summer tour, Missy kept it fresh with a curved side part. Their makeup was soft and natural, highlighting their stunning features with a youthful glow we all want to bottle up.

Hip-hop heads have loved and vibed with Missy and Queen Latifah for decades. Further, they’ve continued to inspire Black women with their style, attitude, and poise. Their impact on music, film, fashion, and culture is undeniable.

They should receive their flowers – and everything else they deserve. Congratulations to both.
