Must-Use Products

Many stylists specializing in black hair will tell you that the right products are key! Since all hair types are different, you want to use whichever brand works for you, while opting for these kinds of products:

Clarifying shampoo
Moisturizing conditioner
Strengthening deep conditioner (if needed)
Heat protectant
Silkening serum or (lightweight) oil

Note: Avoid heavy products that weigh the hair down, unless you’re going for the “childhood Easter Sunday” look.

The Perfect Prep

Have you ever seen a bomb silk press that didn’t begin with a bomb blow dry? Exactly! A thorough blow-dry is essential to the final results and style’s longevity.

Note: If you’re done blow-drying your hair and can’t comb through, you probably need to try again using smaller sections.

Use Beyonce’s Method (Medium-Heat Blow Dry > Pressing Comb)

Use Kamala Harris’ Method (Bristle Brush — aka “Blowout/Dominican Blowout”)

“I don’t use a curling iron, it’s too much heat…I use a round [boar bristle] round brush. It takes a while but it’s too much heat to do [both].” -VP Kamala Harris (22:02)

2 Ways To Wrap Your Hair At Night

Don’t forget to wrap your hair in a scarf before bed! Here are 2 options, depending on the look you want…

For silky-straight hair, wrap your hair in a circular motion around the crown of your head tie with a silk scarf (use pins if needed to help secure).
If it’s volume that you want, opt for pinning your hair. You can pin curl in small sections, or tie your hair in a loose high-ponytail, then pin into a bun.

Note: For added protection, throw a bonnet over the scarf and add a satin pillow case to your cart.

Don’t Skip the Gym, Do This Instead…

Ladies, it’s 2024…you no longer have to choose between your hair and your workout. Here’s why…

Investing in a quality sweatband will change your life.

Part hair down the middle, creating 2 large sections
Pull hair taut and secure into 2 high buns (with pins or a lightweight/small rubber band to avoid bumps and creases)
Place sweatband on as normal (secure with pins if needed)
Leave sweatband on for as long as possible or until hair fully dry

Note: This method only works if hair and roots are completely dry before removing the sweatband and buns…don’t say we didn’t warn you

Happy Silk Press Season!
