Gena Rowlands, well-known for her role as “Elder Allie” in The Notebook, has died at 94 years old.

Sources report that Rowlands passed on Wednesday in her California home (confirmed by her sons representative, according to Variety). The cause of death has not yet been revealed, however, the retired actress did battle with Alzheimers—a touching interrelatedness between her real-life and her character Allie.

Rowlands’ son and director of The Notebook, Nick Cassavetes, revealed his mother’s diagnosis at the film’s 20th anniversary celebration (June 2024) saying:

“I got my mom to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer’s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she’s had Alzheimer’s,” he continued to Entertainment Weekly,                                                               “She’s in full dementia. And it’s so crazy — we lived it, she acted it, and now it’s on us.”

Gena Rowland’s other credits include A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Gloria (1980), and The Skeleton Key (2005). Her over 100 television and movie credits earned her two Golden Globes, four Emmy Awards and two Best Actress nominations at the Academy Awards.
