Ashanti and Nelly have a unique love story. They met at the Grammys in 2003, then dated, then broke up, then got together and now are married with a son. Their relationship will soon be documented on a new reality TV show on Peacock called Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together.
The eight-episode show will give Ashanti and Nelly, who were both hitmakers in the early aughts, a chance to provide the narrative about their love story. As they’ve already shared, they dated for the better part of a decade and then broke up. In 2021, per Ashanti, they reconnected at a Verzuz performance that pitted Fat Joe against Ja Rule. Nelly was there to perform and when he saw Ashanti, years after they broke up, he gave her a hug.
Right after the Verzuz on an Instagram Live, Ashanti said that while she was surprised to see her former boyfriend, there was no residual bitterness.
“Now look, this is the crazy part: I had no idea he was gonna be there,” she said at the time. “I haven’t seen him or spoken to him since we broke up. Six years or something? So, I didn’t know what to expect.”
Later, she said the hug led to the two exchanging numbers again and eventually going out.
“It was weird because the butterflies came back,” she said in on Jenna and Friends after they started going out again. “It was new but it was old. It was still so familiar, it was like nothing happened in between. That’s when I knew this had to be real because it just feels like no time went by.”
The show’s official synopsis reads: “Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together…follows the electrifying journey of this beloved couple as they reignite their love, navigate the ups and downs of newlywed life, and the challenges of parenthood while juggling their thriving careers. Can this unstoppable duo prove that their love truly can conquer all? A fun-filled exploration of love’s second chances.”
Ashanti and Nelly secretly married in 2024, after welcoming their son Kareem Kincaide Haynes in July. It’s likely both families, including Nelly’s two older children (and two he adopted after his sister’s passing) and Ashanti’s family, including her ‘momager’ Tina and sister Shia will be part of the show.
