Just hours after the president issued tariffs that absolutely no one wanted, a few Republicans joined their Democratic brethren to pass a resolution to block the unwanted import taxes against Canada.
Because some Republicans are tired, too.
“In a 51-48 vote, four Republicans – Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and both Kentucky senators, the former majority leader Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul – defied Trump’s pressure campaign and supported the measure,” the Guardian reports.
Democrats reportedly used a slick move to force a vote, which effectively ends this phony push and this fake story that Canada is partly responsible for America’s fentanyl crisis, reasoning President Trump has used to explain overcharging or closest ally.
“Tariffs will hurt our families. Canada is not an enemy,” Democratic senator Tim Kaine, who sponsored the bill said Wednesday, the Guardian reports.
“Let’s not label an ally as an enemy. Let’s not impose punishing costs on American families at a time they can’t afford it. Let’s not hurt American small businesses. Let’s not make our national security investments in ships and subs more expensive.”
Republicans, who normally follow Trump’s lead, have been reluctant to fully embrace the end of free trade– once a mainstay in Republican doctrine. But many of them were too spineless to actually stand up to the president.
And let’s be clear, they still haven’t. Yes, the Senate signed legislation against tariffs against Canada but it might as well be symbolic as the legislation has no chance of passing the “Republican-controlled House and being signed by Trump.”
A symbolic Republican pushback against this fascist regime is probably going to be as good as it gets.
“Many economists are warning that the plan could cause an economic contraction, and GOP senators are already watching with unease as Trump upends the United States’ relationship with the rest of the world,” the Guardian reports.
Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to blast the four senators who voted against import taxes to Canada urging them to “get on the Republican bandwagon, for a change, and fight the Democrats’ wild and flagrant push to not penalize Canada for the sale, into our Country, of large amounts of Fentanyl.”
He also added that he wouldn’t sign the measure should it appear on his Diet Coke-stained desk.
Defending her vote, Collins said that the tariffs would hurt working families in her state of Maine, which shares a long border with Canada.
“The price hikes that will happen for Maine families, every time they go to the grocery store, they fill their gas tank, they fill their heating oil tank, if these tariffs go into effect, will be so harmful,” Maine Sen. Susan Collins said. “And as price hikes always do, they will hurt those the most who can afford them the least.”
Democrats used Tuesday’s win in the Wisconsin state supreme court race as proof that America is tired of Trump’s regime.
“The American people are seeing how bad Trump is,” Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer, said. “Tariffs are a good part of it. And they are not supporting people like Elon Musk and those who support Donald Trump.”
