The Associated Press found itself in hot water after a viral moment on the Grammys red carpet showed two of its reporters cutting off an interview with R&B legend Babyface to speak with Chappell Roan instead. The backlash was swift, and on Monday, the AP issued a formal apology.

“We are deeply sorry for cutting our interview with Babyface short on our YouTube livestream of the Grammys red carpet,” the AP said in a statement. “We have apologized to him through his representative and to our viewers on the livestream.”

The moment unfolded when Babyface was speaking with the reporters, only for them to suddenly spot Roan in the background. Instead of finishing their interview, they started calling out the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer’s name. In classic Babyface fashion, is was handled with pure class.

“You guys want to do that? Go do that,” he said, handing back the mic and stepping aside with a smile. One of the reporters offered a quick “So sorry, Babyface. So sorry,” before shifting full focus to Roan.

Boyz II Men member and Babyface’s longtime friend Shawn Stockman took to Instagram following the interview saying, “That would never happen in the NFL or the NBA. You would never disrespect Magic Johnson. Because there’s a level of understanding of what those particular human beings brought to that respective profession. But it seems to be the opposite in the music industry. The industry tends to have a really bad habit of doing very disrespectful things to people that should be honored…What those two people did to that legend is f—ked up.”
