We all know how the saying goes when the family feuds, but it’s a whole different ball game when you’re dealing with a battle of the exes.

Take for example the decade-long back-and-forth that’s been going on between former Hollywood fling Serena Williams and Drake, which recently came to a head at the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show when the tennis star popped up in the performance spearheaded by Drizzy’s number one opp, Kendrick Lamar.

Common Admits Beef With Drake Was Over Serena

While many people took it simply as one Compton native showing love to another, those with knowledge of the history between Serena and Drake saw it a different way. Stephen A. Smith for example thought it was a bit distasteful when the topic was brought up on a recent episode of ESPN’s First Take, where he boldly stated, “If I’m married, and my wife is going to join trolling her ex, [then] go back to his ass ’cause clearly you don’t belong with me. What you worried about him for and you with me? Bye!” [sic]

Alexis Ohanian, Serena’s current husband and father to their two daughters, was quick to jump on X and reassure that his wife’s appearance was more about her recreating the infamous “Crip walk” that got so many people outraged back in 2012 following her big win over Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon.

Interestingly enough, 2012 was a time where Serena and Drake were caught in a bit of a love triangle with fellow rapper Common. It was originally rumored that things between the two began a year prior after they were seen together during her victorious run at the 2011 Rogers Cup in his hometown of Toronto. However, it appears there was a bit of overlap in terms of who was dating who: Common dropped a diss titled “Sweet” in November 2011, Drake fired back on “Stay Schemin” in January 2012 and Common returned the jab days later on his own “Stay Schemin” remix only to squash the beef altogether a month later while on the 2012 GRAMMYs red carpet. At the time many just saw it as Common either being an unsatisfied OG or simply trying to boost sales on his 9th studio album, The Dreamer/The Believer.2014 sit-down with VladTV would later reveal it all stemmed back to Serena.

On the heels of last year’s Drake vs Kendrick fiasco, Common joined the Drink Champs podcast to better break down his disagreements with Drake a decade prior.

By summer 2015, Drake and Serena were seemingly back in the swing of things following a tongue-locking session in the backroom of a Cincinnati restaurant captured by TMZ just days after he was seen watching her advance to the quarterfinals at the 2015 Rogers Cup in Toronto. That September, he followed her to New York as she competed in the U.S. Open — paparazzi captured her getting in his car after the big loss against Roberta Vinci — in addition to sitting front row alongside Anna Wintour while showcasing her NYFW Fall 2015 Serena Williams Signature Statement Collection with HSN.

This of course led to another love triangle with her now-husband, the aforementioned Alexis Ohanian. The dating timeline between him and Serena goes back to as early as May 2015, with Alexis also supporting her at the U.S. Open that year — he’s seen at Day 5 (seen above), while Drake is spotting during Day 11. Somewhere down the line, possibly due to Drake’s well-documented on-again/off-again situationship with Rihanna, Alexis won over Serena and they’ve been married since November 2017.

In a twist only revealed last year, Drake spilled his feelings in the booth about the relationship with Serena in the words of his Rihanna-assisted 2016 single, “Too Good,” with lyrics like “I’m way too good to you” and “You take my love for granted.”

On one hand, Serena could just be harmlessly getting her “lick back” following the unprovoked diss aimed at Alexis back in 2022 where Drake raps, “Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie / He claim we don’t got a problem but / No, boo, it is like you comin’ for sushi” on his Her Loss album cut, “Middle Of The Ocean.” However, with almost a decade removed from the relationship and both seemingly moved on, should there still be room for sneak dissing?

Given that we were way off in our halftime guest predictions for K. Dot, we’ll choose to believe Serena’s appearance was simply an act of love for the city of Compton. If it was in fact meant to be petty, well, let’s hope this officially puts an end to their feuding exes fiasco.
