This declaration reflects the nation’s deep respect for Carter’s legacy as the 39th President of the United States and his significant contributions to humanitarian and philanthropic efforts.

The federal holiday coincides with Carter’s funeral service at Washington National Cathedral, a prestigious venue for state funerals of presidents and other national figures.

The service will feature eulogies from President Biden and members of Carter’s family, along with posthumous tributes by notable figures whose words will be read by their children.

After the Washington service, Carter’s body will return to Georgia for private burial.

Carter’s passing at the age of 100 has prompted a series of memorials, including his lying in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.

Thousands of citizens, lawmakers, and dignitaries are expected to gather to pay their respects, mirroring a historical tradition of national mourning for former presidents.

On January 9, federal offices will close, as is customary for the funerals of former presidents.

Similarly, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will suspend operations to honor Carter’s memory.

While most federal departments will shut down, essential services related to national security and defense may remain active.

The move demonstrates how such occasions not only serve as moments for reflection but also unify the nation in collective remembrance.
