The spotlight on Gospel music is growing brighter. This season we’re seeing artists from that genre stepping into arenas and on bigger stages—literally.

Just last week, Tasha Cobbs Leonard helped kick off the first game of the regular NFL season with her rendition of the “Lift Every Voice” national anthem. She was lauded for her powerful voice ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens game.

Christian rapper Aaron Cole wowed fans at the Houston Astros game on Family Faith Night. He performed “Look @ God” and other tracks from his “Sorry, I Change (Again)” album to an energetic crowd.

Gospel greats are also front and center. The Reunion Tour is currently underway with Kirk Franklin, Kierra Sheard-Kelly, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Marvin Sapp, and The Clark Sisters all on the road together. Back in June, Franklin sat down with Ebony Magazine to chat about the tour and message he hopes to share on stage.

“We really want to curate a moment where people are pulled into moments of nostalgia, moments of relief, moments of inspiration, moments of aspiration, moments of humor, moments of spiritual reminders,” he told the publication. “We will have collaborative moments. People are going to be on stage doing their biggest songs. The night is all about the music. Even in the stage production, everything leads back to the music.”

Franklin also said that The Reunion Tour works because of the specific relationships each artist has with each other and it’s a testament to the influence of the church.

“I think the best benefit of Gospel music is that we have these histories and these relationships that go back so many years,” he said. “That’s just the nature of the church.”

He told Ebony he promises not to let the fans down and he’s most excited about being on the road with his friends. He said amplifying the good news of Jesus Christ is a wonderful bonus.

The Reunion Tour kicked off in Philadelphia in early September and wraps up in Los Angeles in November.
