A biopic is in the works that focuses on a pivotal time in Steve Harvey’s life. The film, titled Seventy-Two, will detail why it was so important in shaping the now-successful actor, comedian, TV and radio personality’s career.
Per Deadline, the biopic is being developed by Objectively Good Media (OGM), a relatively new but ambitious production company. Their first feature, Damned If I Do, stars Katey Segal of Sons of Anarchy and Married…with Children fame. East 112, a company headed by Harvey and Thabiti Stephens, the chief strategy officer of Steve Harvey Global, will also produce.
As it’s still in the early stages, the project does not have a writer attached yet.
In 1993, Harvey, then 36, had spent a decade trying to build a show business career after leaving behind a stable sales gig. It came down to an Apollo Theater performance that would set the tone for the ascent that followed.
OGM came to Harvey with the idea.
“I’ve been reluctant to make a movie about my life for years until I read the pitch for Seventy-Two,” Harvey said. “It focuses on one of the most difficult moments in my journey and career, and shows the world that hope is never truly lost. Wait until you see what we do with this.”
Harvey hosted Showtime at the Apollo from 1993 – 2000. His success there launched him into the multimedia career he enjoys today with multiple gigs including Family Feud, Celebrity Family Feud and a syndicated morning radio show. He’s also one of the original Kings of Comedy and was the star of the eponymous sitcom that ran on the WB for six seasons.
Harvey recounted his journey in an interview with Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay earlier this year, where he talked about the lowest moments in his rise to fame.
But his success hasn’t come without controversy. He was excoriated by Katt Williams in his viral Club Shay Shay interview that reached over 60 million viewers. But Harvey mostly brushed it off with minor damage to his reputation and career.
“Steve Harvey’s ability to turn his trials into triumphs is inspiring,” Mohamed Kheir of OGM said in a statement. “We look forward to sharing this powerful narrative with audiences worldwide.
