Freddie Jackson is battling kidney disease. The “You Are My Lady” crooner made the announcement on Instagram on Tuesday (September 3).

“I want to share something deeply personal with you after a lot of thought and reflection,” he began the video. “I have been diagnosed with kidney disease. This journey has had its challenges, but I’ve decided to face it with openness and resiliency.”

In the accompanying caption, the 67-year-old shared his close friends, manager, music family and his fans are keeping him going. His fans raised concerns about his health back in July. Essence reports the singer performed at the St. Kitts Music Festival for the first time in 25 years and wasn’t performing well, plus fans pointed out his slimmer build.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 7 U.S. adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and an estimated 9 in 10 adults with the disease aren’t aware they have it.

The National Kidney Foundation said CKD causes more deaths each year than breast cancer or prostate cancer. They find it’s the under-recognized public health crisis and people with kidney disease may not feel ill or notice symptoms until the disease is advanced.

Jackson has partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness and support for people affected by the disease.

“It’s important to me not only that I share this with you as part of my personal story, but as a way to make a positive difference,” Jackson said in his video. “ [Kidney Disease] is a cause close to my heart.”

Jackson’s video was accompanied by a call to action to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation with a $100 goal. The fundraiser surpassed that goal and raised $201 as of writing.

He ended his video thanking everyone for their love and support as he takes control of his health and well-being. Jackson believes with help, he can make a difference.
