Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as White House press secretary under Donald Trump, decided that while introducing Trump at a town-hall event in Michigan on Tuesday, she would echo Sen. J.D. Vance’s “childless cat lady” rhetoric in attacking Vice President Kamala Harris.

Despite the fact that Vance spent weeks trying to clean up the mess his remark about how “childless cat ladies” shouldn’t be holding elected positions because they “don’t really have a stake” in America’s future, Sanders decided she would continue the tradition of her party’s abject inability to read the room by claiming Harris can’t be “humble” because she has no biological children — a remark so jarring that even a senior Trump adviser found it “offensive.”

From the New York Times:

Introducing former President Donald J. Trump at a town-hall event in Michigan on Tuesday, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas extolled the virtue of humility in politics with an amusing story: She once teared up while watching her daughter get ready for a father-daughter dance, and her daughter said, “It’s OK, Mommy, one day you can be pretty too.”

“So my kids keep me humble,” Ms. Sanders said. Then, mispronouncing Vice President Kamala Harris’s name, she added, “Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn’t have anything keeping her humble.”

There are levels of bad to Sanders’ remarks

First, like Vance, Sanders appears to believe parenthood doesn’t count when a person only has stepchilderen, of which Harris has two.

Here’s what senior 2024 Trump campaign adviser Bryan Lanza had to say about Sanders’ remark during an appearance on CNN:

I too was blessed to have a stepmother. I wouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t be able to have normal conversations without a stepmother. So, I found that comment to be actually offensive. I don’t know what more to say about that. I’m disappointed in Sarah was saying that. I’m sure I’m going to get a criticism from the campaign. But I have to sort of defend somebody who’s a stepmom. It’s a tough job. People step into that role. It’s usually a difficult dynamic. My mom excelled at it. I’m sure your mom excited. I’m sure you excited and we should reward that and sort of speak of that in a very high tone.

But even if Harris didn’t have a hand in raising her husband’s children, which she did, according to her husband and his children, this notion that a person should be devalued in society or that they have no moral anchor because they chose (and in many cases didn’t choose) not to procreate is not just absurd, thoughtless and narrow-minded, but it’s harmful to millions of American adults, many of whom may be Trump supporters.

Why are white people so obsessed with humbling Black women?

Then there’s the part of Sanders’ remark that is likely to fly under the radar: Why are white people so obsessed with humbling Black women? (unfortunately I could pose the same question to a lot of Black men, but that’s another post for another day.)

There’s always a demand for women, especially Black women and women of color, to be “humble” when they hold positions that are traditionally and still overwhelmingly held by white men. It’s laughable that Sanders would call on Harris to be “humble” while being a dedicated supporter of arguably the least humble president in America’s history.

Donald Trump still, to this day, lacks the humility to admit he lost a legal and fair election in 2020. His ego won’t even allow him to concede that he lost his debate against Haris earlier this month. Instead, Don the Delulu claimed “polls clearly show I won” the debate when even the most generous reputable polling data indicates the opposite is true. Hell, when Trump launched into his unhinged rant about pet-eating immigrants on the debate stage, it was in response to Harris baiting him by mocking his obsession with his crowd sizes. Trump lost the debate largely because Harris was successful in weaponizing his utter lack of humbleness against him.

Trump has five children from three marriages and none of them made him humble. How exactly would Sanders explain that?
