Rae Christine, a personal brand coach based in Chicago, sparked an interesting debate on social media — when did the girls stop wearing heels to the club? The TikTok video has gone viral with over 6 million views and thousands of commenters chiming in on her message and sharing their opinion on her personal choice of club shoe.

Christine expressed alarm at the number of women she observed wearing flats and sandals while dancing at the club during her recent trip to Las Vegas. This occurred, presumably, at Drai’s After Hours, a nightclub located in Sin City, as indicated in her video.

Don’t get me wrong I believe in being comfortable but I don’t think the club is the place for that #lasvegas #fyp #nightlife #clubbing

“I don’t know what’s happening to club culture, but the girlies are not wearing heels to the clubs anymore,” Rae said. “As a 34-year-old, I know I don’t look my age, but as a 34-year-old, do we need to come out of retirement and teach the girls how to wear heels and what heels you need to shop for?” she asked.

“Part of the thrill of going to the club is dancing on the couch in your heels. You got to figure out how to strengthen those ankles… it’s a right of passage.”

Rae Christine showed off her block heels at the end of the video.

Near the conclusion of the video, Rae showcased her comfortable white block heels, advocating for a revival of heel culture within club settings.

“We got to figure it out” she added.

Christine’s video received a ton of reactions in the comments section with many firing off jokes about the TikTok influencer’s bulky heels.

“Baby I was excepting STILLETOS, PUMPS… you brought out the ‘before you walk out my lifeeeee’ 12’s,’” one person joked. “I was totally expecting stiletto heels for clubbing that’s more like picnic or lunch type of heels,” chimed in another TikTok goer.

A third user quipped, “Not the orthopedic heels!” While a fourth commented, “Not the Easter Sunday heels,” likening Rae’s shoes to something their grandma would wear.

Rae responded to the wisecracks in a follow up post, with a video that captured her at a Lil John concert, enjoying the show as she wore her “millennial heels.”

Women aren’t wearing heels everyday, according to studies.

Rae’s observation may hold weight, given studies indicating a decrease in the frequency of which women wear heels daily. A 2014 study by the American Podiatric Medical Association surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults aged 18 and older, revealing that nearly half of all women (49%) wear high heels, despite 71% of heel wearers complaining that heels hurt their feet. Moreover, the study found that only 2% of women wear high heels daily, and just 5% wear them five days a week. Nearly half (46%) of women reported wearing heels rarely or never.

Age can also impact a woman’s decision to sport heels. Recent studies indicate that younger women are more likely to wear high heels daily. According to Ortho Atlanta, 49% of women aged 18 to 24, 42% of women aged 25 to 49, and 34% of women aged 50 and over wear heels daily. Another industry study corroborated these findings, reporting that 72% of women wear high heels and 39% wear them daily.

The decline of women wearing heels daily could be do to some of the adverse health impacts associated with the trend. Frequent wearing of heels can lead to alterations in spine alignment, as noted by Advent Health. This can result in uneven wear and tear on vertebral discs, joints and back ligaments impacting posture and balance. Pain is also a factor. Among women who wear high heels, 59% reported experiencing toe pain, while 54% reported pain in the ball of the foot, Ortho Atlanta highlighted.
